Objectives
1.) Demonstrate the ability to determine the development and interests of children through observation.
I have noticed that when in the center’s yard, they enjoy looking at the world around them through a magnifying glass. Leeland has a superb eye for noticing bugs. So neat to notice that there were learning moments happening all the time if we observe more and listen. Often, the red magnifying glass is the favourite among some children. It was neat to see that the children are capable of Sharing. However, there was a moment when Lennox got the red magnifying glass first. This resulted in Leeland being upset that he did not get it. After explaining, we can either put a timer on for 5 minutes the we can trade magnifying glasses, or we can find something else to do till he is done. Leeland took a minute to collect himself and decided to go play on the bikes instead. Since being at Lil’ Quills I have seen growth in the children’s peer connections and communication. Breathing techniques were essential for all of us. Yes I even caught myself breathing with the children through their high emotions.

Today I got to meet Leeland, Olivia, and Lennox at Lil’ Quills Head Start Daycare. I have come to learn that Miss. O is working on her social and emotional learning. I may do some activities around emotions and research some calming techniques to have on a resource in case I can present when needed.
2.) Demonstrates skills working with groups of children, maintaining children’s interest, promoting interaction and providing children with a choice about their involvement when appropriate.

Today I brought premade air dry clay into the center today. I wanted to see what kids were open to doing . I asked Leeland,Olivia, nd Lennox if they would like to play with some clay . Sheer excitement arose from all 3 of the children. The children take upon themselves to find their own chairs at the same table. Mr. Ld was asked to put tools on the table he was more than happy to. I gave him a role to help. It helped build up his confidence, independence and his sense of self identity.
CIRCLE TIME
The children love their felt board stories and songs. I found in Denikas felt board bin the 5 pumpkins. You name a colour pumpkin ( which is developmentally appropriate to know their colours. and sing Spider, spider, where are you? Are you under the blue pumpkin? The children are encouraged before we sing to take turns. They overall enjoy singing.
3.) Demonstrate ability to plan, implement, revisit, extend, document and evaluate learning environments that are sensitive to, developmentally appropriate for young children and reflect current educational planning theory.

Denicka has been doing class activities around farming . While outside on Friday, we attempted to build a house with rocks and pine cones. Today I brought out bulk craft items ( feathers , popsicle sticks, pom poms, pipe cleaners) and let the children 0penly do whatever with them.
4.) Demonstrate an ability to be an effective member of the educator team taking on assigned roles and assigning roles.

Today I decided to alternate helping Denika and Simran. Today I put the chairs up and rugs and swept the floor, while Simran mopped the floor. I found out Wednesdays and Fridays are days to clean the toilets. Fridays are also deep cleaning at Lil’ Quills.

Today, Simran and Denika had put the children down to nap. Olivia has a speech therapy appointment. Therefore, she napped away from the other 2 students. So before she came out with her cot I decided to sweep the floor . Due to her cot location i was unable to fill bucket till she wakes up. I took initiation to do without being asked .

Today each of us adults had a child to put down at nap time. Mr. Lx was the child I was helping relax to nap. He likes his back rubbed gently and his brow smoothly . It is becoming easier to put the boys down. I have not had the opportunity to put Miss. O down for a nap.

We have a new student at the center. Kaleb John. He is almost three years old. He is still adjusting to the routine at Lil’ Quills. At nap time it was challenging as he still likes to be held to be put to sleep. Denika was putting the three younger children to sleep, while I put down the other 2 older children. The older children were exhausted from the outdoor play before lunch, and were out in no time. Yet poor Kaleb was in need of some extra support. Kaleb was fighting his sleep and did not want to sleep on his cot with himself. Denika was trying to put Journey to sleep also. I went and offered help to Denika and asked if I could try put Kaleb to rest. I tried different methods to soothe him. Rocking while walking was not working. I tried craddling in my arms and was ok with it as long as his legs were not confined. He fell asleep being held. I felt a sense of accomplishment with Kaleb. I made him feel comfortable and safe to sleep.

I was delighted that Deb Jarvis ( T.R.U E.C.E Instructor) paid a visit to the center. She came to chat about her visit what she observed, her notes she took while visiting the center, and discuss my program planning . During the time Deb was there I attempted to chat to her across the room. I was unaware that the children would be triggered into a conversational frenzy by me doing so, and distracted them from their routine and eating time . Which Deb and I discussed was that I also should be a role model and practice quietness and stillness just as much as the children. Which to me made complete sense, as part of my philosophy was to provide care and teaching that promotes equality and justice. This was a reminder that i needed. This brought to my attention now has me longing to ask Denni if the rule applies due to them not eating and using their time wisely? Or was the rule implemented due to getting them kindergarten ready? I am aware that the center rules are what they are for a reason. Myself is curious to know reason why this rule is . Also how can I support this rule other than being a present model in practicing quiet respectful eating and time management. I would like to be informed on the same page as them. Yet also support My mentor and her co-worker , caregivers and children that attend Lil’s Quills.
6.) Demonstrate an ability to engage in ongoing self-evaluation
the act or process of evaluating one’s own actions, motives, goals, etc; the results or written assessment produced by this process.
I believe i did get better at mindful eating at snack time and meals at the center. Time is a valued commodity at Lil’ Quills.
