Before school program
This morning for the first bit was Karlie and Andrew. I had a paper craft printed off and prepared and Karlie was coloring. Andrew was off playing with the heavy duty wooden truck/ machine by himself until some more peers joined him. Many times the children were reminded not to have a demolition derby with the trucks, and to be kind with the toys we playing with. Yet without consideration a student apparently slammed another child’s fingers while rough playing with the trucks . The boy came to table where Karlie and I was. The person whom gotten his fingers caught decided to laugh and try sit near proximity. Andrew in tears i mentioned kindly that we talk nicely or dont say anytjing at all. Dont be a bully. The boy didn’t tell us exactly what made him upset till the next day it was dealing with the next morning. In the E.l.f I felt that moment was a teachable moment in the well-being and belonging. The girls was told how it made Andrew felt and how inappropriate it is to hurt others. That children’s actions do affect us whether it be bad or good. I feel that the student got hurt also learned that he should speak to us if someone is hurting you. Yet there were kids there that are content playing alone , was intriguing how each kid is vastly different .
In the Classroom
After the morning message it was journal writing time. We are working on the sight words ” I am.” I decided walk around and seen my buddy Kayden pondering what to do. Ms. Shaw mentioned I could lightly outline the letters for Kayden to trace. So I asked Kayden “what are you doing in your photo ?” He replied ” I am coloring!”. Somedays it’s hard get this guy get focused. Today he was into it and I was able to connect to him threw positive responses, high fives and smiles. I am finally making some connections with Kayden. It was a great success!
Math with the kindergartens
I got the opportunity to read a book to the kindergarten math group. We sang and counted with Pete the Cat. 12 groovy days of Christmas was a hit and catchy song to say the least! The energy and atmosphere was fun and festive ! Kids got over being shy after the first couple of verses.
After reading at the carpet Mr. Alan had another numeracy activity. He had 1-10 printed and placed in random order through out the room . Each student was to find 1-10 , then write on their practice sheet. Was fun being encouraging while kids searched for their assigned number . Being positive makes a difference.
E.L.F refers this type of work to be categorized under communication and literacies . Number recognition game was played . The numbers 1 – 10 were placed randomly in the room. The kids were asked to find the number, then practice on the worksheet at hand.
Alphabet and word recognition
Miss. Lila had some challenges staying present at the table during reading group. Her team has decided that when she’s emotional and having her big feelings is to take herself to a safe place and have a timer on to have a few minutes for herself. So her and her twin at beginning of group were not having it and took themselves to the carpet with a toy. After their 5 minutes to regulate , I proceeded to go sit at carpet and bring the magnets and alphabet sheet for letter recognition. Ryder went back to work at the table, and Lila and I were able to do some of the work she was supposed to do at the table. So in that moment, I took upon myself to adapt and try something outside of the box and bring the work to her. Lila was successful down on floor instead of at the table. I’m just appeased that she was able to be present and do what her classmates are doing.
The practice of the letters sounds were practiced by the students, while Mrs. Destrake shows them the sound. We would add additional letters that would eventually build up to a 3 letter word such as cat ,sat. Some kids were just not feeling it at first , as time wore on some progress was made.
Finishing Pinecone bird feeders
At the beginning of the week we tied off pine cones with strings. Now is time for kids to smear peanut butter all over the cones and dip in bird seed. Before that , Mrs. Destrake was walking around asking kids what kind of flowers or seeds do you think are in the bag? I admire her keeping the kids engaged with questions that make them think and let them be involved in their learning. One of the students made note that on the bag is a sunflower.
Mrs. Destrake spoke also told the children that you will see birds and possibly squirrels more once you put the feeder out. It is fun when you can learn about the environment around you and the animals you co-habitate with. This is touching base with others, Materials, and the World in the early learning framework. The kids been reading and doing activities around the forest and the mammals, birds that are around them.
